To date, Trump has backed only one legislative proposal in the Republican Congress: to repeal and replace the Affordable Health Act, or Obamacare. Working with a cooperative Congress, Roosevelt proposed and Congress enacted five major pieces of legislation: the Emergency Banking Act, the National Industry Recovery Act, the Glass-Steagall Act, the Federal Securities Act and the Federal Emergency Relief Act, all designed to address the devastation of the Great Depression and curb the abuses that had led to the stock market crash of 1929. Trump’s pro-business and anti-regulation approach has sparked exuberance on Wall Street and led to a surge in the stock market. Roosevelt managed to stem the widespread panic in the business community and begin what would be a very long process of recovery. Trump’s tweets to his followers have addressed government policy but also ranged from the trivial to the vituperative to the bizarre.Īnother similarity is that both presidents inspired business confidence. Franklin Roosevelt was faced with hostile Republican newspapers so he used the medium of radio and during his first 100 days produced his first “Fireside Chat” explaining his banking holiday and policies. Both immediately embarked on extensive reform efforts.Īnother similarity is that both felt the need to reach over the heads of the established media of their day to reach the American public. ![]() The chief similarity between Roosevelt and Trump is that both came into office with a full Congress of the same party. Both confronted very different environments but even so, it brought out some interesting insights. I prepared a spreadsheet of the two and it is included at the end of this article. ![]() It might be productive-or at least interesting-therefore, to compare and contrast Franklin Roosevelt’s first 100 days with Donald Trump’s. He was sworn in amidst such a devastating crisis and he took decisive action so quickly, particularly in contrast to his predecessor Herbert Hoover, that his first 100 days have stood as a benchmark for executive effectiveness ever since. There is no magic moment that occurs on the 100th day of a presidency.īut the 100-day milestone was set by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 when he took office.
